The much-loved GoldCare55+ program welcomed a record-sized and enthusiastic crowd to its first Lunch N’ learn in three years.
New and longtime members of the program sponsored by Marshall Medical Centers were excited to resume regular events and sign up for trips after a hiatus forced by the pandemic. Approximately 120 seniors from all over Marshall County enjoyed the Mardi Gras themed event at the Guntersville Rec Center. The luncheon was sort of a reunion for the members who have missed seeing each other at the monthly get-togethers.
Dr. Sean English, a vascular surgeon with Northeast Alabama Vascular and Vein Specialists, was the featured speaker. He explained his complicated practice in very simple terms.
“We’re just human plumbers,” he said.
Vascular surgeons use medical and surgical techniques to diagnose and treat many conditions, including blood clots, blood vessel blockages and blood vessel injuries. Vascular surgeons are also experts in preventing vascular problems, such as stroke and complications of diabetes.
“Everything we do is evidence-based,” he explained. “But we tailor everything to our patients.”
Dr. English said he typically ends up treating his patients long term.
“I see some patients for years, and they become like family,” he said.
