Marshall Medical Centers Family Medicine Residency Program Receives Accreditation

Residency Program plans to welcome its inaugural class mid- 2027

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (Nov. 4, 2026) — The UAB Marshall Family Medicine Residency program has received initial accreditation to move forward with a three-year residency program slated to kick-off next July.

The training program will combine the academic excellence of UAB with the learning environment and extensive clinical opportunities available at Marshall Medical Centers. Based at Marshall South in Boaz and led by UAB faculty, training will prepare future physicians to deliver healthcare in rural areas. Additional training experiences will take place at Marshall Medical Center North and affiliated clinical sites, including Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children.

With only six residents per class, the program will provide individualized attention, close faculty relationships and a supportive environment focused on residents’ success.

The comprehensive curriculum includes inpatient and outpatient medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine, women's health, geriatrics, behavioral health and community medicine.

UAB Heersink School of Medicine graduate Chandler Stisher, M.D., will serve as program director.

“In a rural community where access to specialty care is sometimes limited, family physicians play an especially important role in providing comprehensive care close to home,” said Dr. Stisher. “Our goal is to develop confident, well-rounded family physicians who are prepared to practice wherever they are needed most, including communities where they may be among the few physicians available.”

The UAB Marshall Family Medicine Residency program is currently recruiting first-year residents to begin training in July 2027. For more information, contact Program Coordinator Tommy Ennis at tommy.ennis@mmcenters.com.
