Medical Centers HomeCare ranked above state and national average in government study
Medical Centers HomeCare ranked higher than the state and the national average in a comparison study of home health agencies by the government.
With a 4.5 star quality rating, Marshall HomeCare exceeded the national average of 3 stars, as well as the Alabama average of 3.5 stars. Home Health Compare calculated the rankings by using each home health agency’s scores on nine individual quality measures, which are based on home health agency patient assessments and Medicare claims. The study is available on www.medicare.gov/homehealthcompare.
The study used two general types of quality measures:
- Initiated patient care in a timely manner
- Provided patient/caregiver drug education on all medications
- Ensured patients received flu vaccine for the current season
Outcome of care measures – how often the agency:
- Got better at walking or moving around
- Got better at getting in and out of bed
- Got better at bathing themselves
- Was able to engage in activity with less pain
- Experienced less shortness of breath
- Required acute care hospitalization
According to the website, rankings range from 1 to 5 stars with 5 stars being the highest rating. A rating of 4 or 5 stars means the agency performed better than most other agencies. A rating of 1 or 2 stars means that the agency’s performance was below the average of other agencies. Most agencies fall in the middle with a rating of 3 to 3½ stars. Ratings are updated quarterly.
What does this independent assessment mean for our patients? Our agency ranks among the nation’s top home health providers in quality of care, process and outcome measure implementation and overall patient experience. This is a rigorous and comprehensive assessment of care and we are honored to achieve this distinction.
Jeannie Duckett, RN and branch manager of Marshall’s Home Care, said the team is humbled to have received such a distinct honor.
"We pride ourselves in offering high-quality care to our neighbors, and that they have faith and trust in our agency," she said. "These are our friends, family, church members; it means a lot to provide care in the home and meet those quality needs."
Duckett said her staff works hard to not only care for their patients, but also strives to offer the very best home health care available in the area.
"We want to stand apart from the rest, and we want to support our wonderful hospitals in providing quality care to our community," Duckett said.
Frequently Asked Questions
It's understandable that you might have questions. In order to help you feel more at ease with home care and its benefits, we've provided answers to some of the more frequently asked questions by families.
Q: What exactly is medical home care?
These are specialized healthcare-related services that are provided by medical professionals in the comfort of your own home. Our services cover a wide range of medical, social and therapeutic treatments, as well as activities associated with daily living.
Q: Who covers its cost?
Generally, Medicare and/or Medicaid will cover the cost of home care for those patients over the age of 65 who meet either program's eligibility requirements. Private insurance companies, managed care organizations, and CHAMPUS may also pay for many of the services provided by a home care agency like ours. Those services not covered are considered "out of pocket" expenses and are the responsibility of the patient or another party.
Q: Who provides home care services?
Depending on your medical condition, your care may be provided by one of our trained medical professionals or a team of specialists on a part-time, intermittent, hourly or shift basis. Our staff includes registered and licensed practical nurses, therapists, social workers, dietitians and home care aides.
Q: What kinds of services are provided?
Licensed home care organizations such as ours provide a wide range of services. This includes catheter and tube care, cardiac and respiratory monitoring, diabetes management, wound care, in-home therapy and rehabilitation and pain management.
Q: How do I know if I qualify for these services?
Medicare has established guidelines to help patients determine if they qualify for home care services. Regardless of whether you're over 65 or not, their qualification criteria can be helpful in determining if you need home care services. Those needing home care services should be:
- Unable to leave home without a considerable and taxing effort.
- Under the care of a physician.
- Receiving services under a plan of care established and periodically reviewed by a physician.
- In need of skilled nursing care on an intermittent basis, physical therapy, speech-language pathology or have continuing need for occupational therapy.
