Marshall Medical Centers and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) are proud to announce that the UAB Marshall Family Medicine Residency Program has received Initial Accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
This exciting milestone represents a significant investment in the future of healthcare in Marshall County and the surrounding communities.
Our three-year residency program combines the academic excellence of UAB with the personalized learning environment and extensive clinical opportunities available at Marshall Medical Centers.
We are excited to welcome our inaugural class of six family medicine residents in July 2027 and begin a new chapter in medical education in Northeast Alabama.
At UAB Marshall, we believe exceptional family physicians are developed through comprehensive clinical training, individualized mentorship, meaningful patient relationships, and a strong connection to the communities they serve.
Our program provides residents with a unique opportunity to train in a community-based hospital environment while benefiting from the academic resources, educational support, and clinical expertise of UAB.
As a new residency program, we offer something particularly special: the opportunity for our inaugural residents to help establish traditions, shape program culture, and contribute to the future of family medicine education at Marshall Medical Centers.
Our goal is to prepare confident, compassionate, and highly skilled family physicians who are equipped to practice in rural communities and beyond.
Our primary clinical training site is Marshall Medical Center South in Boaz, Alabama. Residents will participate in a comprehensive curriculum featuring inpatient medicine, outpatient continuity care, and experiences across multiple medical specialties.
Our continuity clinic is conveniently located on the ground floor of Marshall Medical Center South, providing opportunities to develop long-term patient relationships while gaining experience in comprehensive family medicine.
Additional training experiences will take place at Marshall Medical Center North and affiliated clinical sites, including Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children.
Personalized Training and Mentorship
With only six residents per class, our program offers individualized attention, close faculty relationships, and a supportive environment focused on resident success.
Full-Spectrum Family Medicine
Our comprehensive curriculum includes inpatient and outpatient medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine, women's health, geriatrics, behavioral health, and community medicine.
Hands-On Clinical and Procedural Experience
Residents will gain practical clinical experience supported by procedural training, simulation-based education, and a longitudinal Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) curriculum.
A Commitment to Rural Healthcare
Our program emphasizes the unique needs of rural and underserved communities, preparing residents to provide high-quality, comprehensive care in a variety of practice settings.
Unique Educational Opportunities
Residents will have opportunities to participate in community outreach, local health initiatives, optional high school sports coverage, and additional training experiences tailored to individual career interests.
Help Build Something Special
Our inaugural residents will have a unique opportunity to help shape the program's identity, contribute to its growth, and establish a lasting legacy for future generations of family physicians.
Marshall County offers the perfect combination of small-town charm, natural beauty, and convenient access to larger metropolitan areas.
Located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, the area is known for its welcoming communities, affordable cost of living, and exceptional outdoor recreation.
Residents can enjoy the beauty of Lake Guntersville, hiking and camping at Lake Guntersville State Park, boating, fishing, and a wide range of local attractions.
With Huntsville, Birmingham, and Chattanooga within convenient driving distance, residents can enjoy the benefits of rural living while remaining connected to larger cities.
We believe residency should be more than professional training. It should also provide opportunities for personal growth, meaningful relationships, and a fulfilling quality of life.
To train exceptional family physicians who provide comprehensive, relationship-centered care with excellence, compassion, and deep connection to rural communities.
Anchoring our training in evidence-based practices, we develop skilled clinicians who will lead with purpose, champion health equity, and strengthen rural health systems for generations to come.
To create thriving rural communities sustained by a strong network of family physicians who lead with integrity, cultural humility, and unwavering commitment to the people they serve.
Our residency will be a catalyst for transforming rural health — a place where clinicians, educators, and communities work side by side to improve access to healthcare, elevate the quality of care, and secure a healthier future for all.
