Marshall Medical Centers continuing long tradition of growth and expansion

As the local area continues to grow, Marshall Medical Centers is keeping pace with the need for advanced healthcare and facilities. Services are being expanded and additional physicians are coming aboard in order to better serve the community.

A neurologist is the latest to join the Marshall team of doctors. Dr. Sheri Swader’s new practice - Neurology of Marshall County - is located in suite 130 of the Medical Plaza Building next door to Marshall North. Dr. Swader recently moved from Valdosta, Ga., but before that she practiced for 15 years in Cullman. She graduated from the University of Arkansas College of Medicine in 2001 and then completed her residency at UAB.

“My goal is not to just take care of patients’ symptoms - I want to help them to be able to enjoy their lives,” she said. “To do that, I look at the entire person – their bodies, minds, spirits and emotions – in order to address the neurological issue. This approach helps create a balance in the person’s life and get them on a path to better health for their whole body. The philosophy is that if people have imbalances – whether physical, emotional or spiritual - it can negatively affect their overall health.”

Marshall South Expansion

Also, a very visible addition at Marshall Medical is a $61 million expansion of its Boaz hospital. The ambitious project will replace 64 existing patient rooms with spacious, modern rooms.

“At the completion of this development in many ways Marshall South will be a new facility,” said Bill Smith, executive director of support services. “All the in-patient rooms will be brand new state-of-the-art rooms. We will have new support service areas to provide for these rooms, an expanded and renovated ICU and a new Endoscopy Suite. These improvements will help us provide for our patients for years to come.”

The expansion also features:

  • Enlarging the ICU from a 12-bed unit to an 18-bed unit
  • New parking lot adding 125 spaces
  • New main entrance with a lobby and cafeteria
  • A check-in and consult room for outpatient surgery as well as a waiting area
  • Gift shop inside relocated main entrance

The expansion project at Marshall South was approved by the Health Care Authorities of the City of Huntsville and Marshall County last year. It is expected to be completed in 22-28 months.

Marshall South is a 150-bed hospital with 975 employees. More than 40,000 patients are treated in the Level III Emergency Department each year. The hospital saw nearly 5,000 discharges last year. Marshall South is voluntarily accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
