Job Shadowing shines a light on healthcare careers for GHS students.

High school program offers students opportunity to go behind the scenes at Marshall Medical.

Several Guntersville High School students spent a day shadowing Marshall Medical professionals working in the jobs they hope to hold one day, and getting a first-hand look at what the work is like. It was part of the school’s Job Shadow Day on March 9, when juniors and seniors chose a career at Marshall North or South to observe.
The student could choose to spend the day with a pediatrician, a labor and delivery nurse, a sonographer, a nurse anesthetist – or in the emergency department or in surgery.
GHS Career Coach Lindsey Beck said the day gave students an opportunity to talk with employers, ask questions, observe specific job tasks and listen to the specific terminology used in each career area. That allows them to also begin to develop an understanding of employability skills such as leadership, teamwork, listening and communication, along with information concerning salary and career advancement opportunities.
“I believe job shadowing gives students a ‘hands-on’ experience that is crucial to their career decisions,” Beck said. “Job shadowing has helped so many of our students gain confidence in planning for life after high school. Thank you to Marshall Medical Centers for hosting our students and allowing them to see the rewards and challenges of a medical professional.”
