Marshall Medical teams with HOSA students for Wellness Screenings

GUNTERSVILLE, ALABAMA-December 16^th 2019- Students from Arab and Albertville High Schools played an essential role in this fall’s employee Wellness screenings.

The students assisted with the annual biometric events for participants of Marshall Medicals’ Wellness 365 program. The recording of biometrics is a vital part of the hospital system’s overall Wellness program which encourages employees and their families to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The students’ function was to record height, weight, blood pressure and heart rate of employees.

These student workers are participants of the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) program. In this program, students are afforded the opportunity to learn invaluable healthcare procedures and skills under the tutelage of Health Science instructors Heather Pettit and Misti Welborn of Arab High School.

Twelve biometric events were held across the North and South campuses during the months of October and November. Arab High School supported five events held at the Guntersville campus while Albertville High School supported five events held at the Boaz campus. Each event utilized four students from each of the groups for a total of 20 students from each group. Mark Brock, Marshall Medical Centers’ Wellness Coach and Employee Health nurse, managed students during the events with the assistance of the student sponsors.

HOSA is an international student organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Science Education (HSE) Division of ACTE. HOSA's two-fold mission is to promote career opportunities in the health care industry and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people. Marshall Medical Centers have partnered with students in the HOSA program since the North campus opened in 1990.

Since its inception in 1976, HOSA has grown gradually reaching over 245,000 members through 54 chartered HOSA Associations in American Samoa, Canada, District of Columbia, Germany, Italy, and Puerto Rico.
